  1. The boy cares about the horses becuase the boy knows that the horses are apart of life and deserve to live like him.The father thinks that he should not be hanging around them

  2. I think the boy likes the horses so much because they are so different from the Angus that his family raises. I noticed this on page 120, when the horses arrive and the cows observe: "Rug peered near-sightedly through the woven-wire fence that marked the border between his field and the miniature horses', and his face was impassive, as it always was." To me, this shows how the cows never show emotion or react to anything, and this is what the boy is used to. The horses are so playful in contrast: "She [Cinnamon] was was teasing the impassive Angus steers, roaring up to them, stopping just short of their great bulk; turning on a dime and dashing away again" (130). The boy watches the horses play and finds them interesting because he doesn't get a lot of time to play as he works the boring steers. I think he cares about them because he is a little jealous of them.

  3. i think that the boy just finds the horses interesting and entertaining. He might just feel a need to take care of the horses also.

  4. I think the boy is close to the horses because his father isn't very close to him, and he can't get close to the angus so he uses this chance to get close to someone/thing. From the way he describes the sorrel in this sentance on page 120, "One fautless dog-sized sorrel. . " makes me think that he really likes the horses, even if his father doesn't. Also, when he says "and to myself, I name it Cinnamon", if he is taking the time to name it, he must care about them, even if it is just the slightest bit.

  5. I think that it has something to do with he has never seen anything like these horses before. Like the way he describes them on page 119, "The miniature horses, fine-boned and fragile as china. They trit-trotted down the incline like the vanguard of a circus parade, tails up, manes fluttering. THey were mostly a bung of tiny pintos, the biggest not even three feet tall at the withers

  6. I think the boy just liked the horses because they are cool. one reason why i think he likes the horses so much because he wanted the miniature horses to live better than they were being treated. another reason like what kenna said he isn't close to his father and he want's someone to be with someone that is cool to be around.

  7. I think the boy cared about the ponies so much because he felt like they were very vunerable and they had no one to take care of them. "Nobody from the miniature horse farm walked their border"(P.123) I think this quote shows how the owners don't really take care of the ponies or the fence. I think the boy also had a love/hate realtionship with the ponies even though he cared about them alot. I think this because when constantly fixing the fence, and the ponies constantly trying to break through, he probably got really annoyed because he was doing it to then save them from his father's gun. I gathered this from the quote "Most days I hated them. I cursed them as they leaned their slight weight against the fence, their ribs showing. I poked them with a sharp stick to get them to move so that I could fix the fence. They would shift their bodies momentarily the press them even harder into the wire." I think this quote shows how the boy cares for the ponies well being because he wants them to live, but gets annoyed by them when they unknowingly reject his trys to keep them on the other side of the fence.

  8. I think the boy was interested in the ponies because they were something new and different. "They were smart, I could tell from the start, I could tell from watching them, from the way they played tag together, darting off to far parts of the pasture to hide, flirting, concealing their compact bodies in folds of the earth and leaping up to race again when they were discovered, their hooves drumming against the hard-packed ground"(pg.119 This quote shows that what the ponies do is new to the boy. The way he states this is in a way of interest not normality.
"Then she took her nose from me and clamped her front teeth on the steel wire of the fence and pulled it toward her, pushed it back. I laughed."(pg.124) This quote shows that the boy is amused with the actions of the ponies. He wouldn't of laughed at the actions if he what the ponies did was normal to him.

  11. I think that the boy knows that he can't have the horses because his dad dosn't like them. so he fights for what he wants.
"He swept a dismissive hand. Can't work them, can't ride them, can't eat them. Useless." pg.120
"They were smart, I couold tell from the start, I could tell from watching them, from the way they played tag together, darting off to far parts of the pasture to hide, flirting, concealing their compact bodies in folds of the earth and leaping up to race again when they discovered, their hooves drumming against the hard-packed ground." pg.122
(These quotes show that he is discovering that he wants the horses, but is not able to have them because of his father.)

  12. I think the boy liked the ponies so much because on page 10, he picked one of them out and named it Cinnamon. I think it had some sort of sentamental value to him. also on page 129 The boy knows exactly what horse was Cinnamon. I picked these because it shows he cares enough about the horses that he gave one a name and, therefor,he will be able to recoginze it again.

  14. I think that the boy likes the horses maybe because, his father doesn't like them. "and to myself, I name it Cinnamon" (page 120, paragraph 1) I think that he likes this horse because it sticks out to him, and maybe he sticks out from all of his friends. I also think that he likes them from the passage, "Horses, ponies, my old man said. He had heard. He swept out a dismissive hand. Can't work them, can't ride them, can't eat them. Useless.

  16. I think the boy likes the horses so much because it a break from a bunch on angus.
"i decided I like tha one the best.To myself, I named it Cinnamon."on page 120 paragraph That shows because the story doesn't say anything about angus or if he named them pepper or another thing you put on food. "Yes sir I said" That states that he wants a horse but he doesn't say anything about angus.

  17. The dad doesnt like the horse because"can't work them, cain't ride them, can't eat them" OR there "useless". The father does have a soul thought becuase when the horses tackled him he laughed in stead of shooting them. I think the old man was raised as a boy not to like horses and was all about work and angus. He wasn't use to the whole horse scene but he ended up liking them. The boy liked them because he is most likely tired of angus and always wanted a pet.

  18. I think that the boy found the ponies interesting and he loved them. I think that he wants a different type of animals besides the one he has. He must really like the ponies because he names one of the ponies Cinnamon and takes care of that one the most, and I also think that the boy wants to show the dad that the ponies arent usless and can be used for something, maybe just for enjoyment...

  19. I think that the kid so much more interested in ponies is because they seemed to have moods. Like the angus cows hes grown up with just stand around and thats really it. But the ponies played around and were having fun, more or less of what they might acually been doing but it seemed to the kid that they were indeed having fun. And I think he liked them because he liked the diversity that they brought to his life.

  20. I think that the boy liked the horses so much because they were alot different from the boring steers he usualy has to take care of, because on page 120 when he is describing them he dosn't seem to be that introrested in the steers. When the horses come they are alot different from the steers and are alot more livley. The boy even says how smart they are and how livley they are. He says this on page 122.

  21. I think the boy liked the hourses because he named one of them to show he has som kind of relationship with one of them and he took care of them as if they where his.
"I have decided I like this one the best. To myself, I named him Cinnamon."
"Then she took her nose from me and clamped her front teeth on the steel wire of the fence and pulled it toward her, pushed it back. I laughed."

  22. I think the boy cared so much about the horses because he felt that he could be close to them. He realized no one was caring for them- kind of like no one was really caring for himself. His father did not seem to care or pay much attention or quality time with the boy, so I think the boy relied on the horses instead.
"Their coats were long and matted, their hooves long untrimmed, curling and ugly."
"My old man seldom came down to this boundary after the day the horses arrived, and nobody from the miniature horse farm walked their border the way we walked ours."

  23. I think the boy's father didn't like the horses because on page 120, the father said,"Can't work them. Can't ride them. Can't eat them. Useless." The boy liked the horses because he found one he can relate to and named it.

  25. Like on page 129 the boy knows who cinnamon is because he had named him and always knew him byn how he look and. the boy wanted to be around the horses because he liked the horses

  26. I think the boy has no friends and he doesnt get to spend anytime with his dad and so the horses are like friends to him cause all he talks about the mini horses because he cares about them so much. pg 124 he promises cinnamon that he will bring her a stump of a carrot or a sugar cube. pg 124 stop you dont want to come over hear if u do my daddy will shoot you

  27. pg 129 - this one i thought was the sorrel was cinnamon. pg. 129 - I PUT my hand on her muzzle

    THey care about him

  28. I think that the boy likes the ponies so much is because they are something unusual on the farm instead of angus and all the open field."This Valley was a beef valley from long before I was born." this shows that the only sights were beef producing animals. So the ponies would be unusual and interesting. I also think he likes them out of curiosity of why his old man doesn't. "You've got to stop it, I said. You don't want to come over here, even if the grass looks good. My old man will shoot you if you do." This shows the boys love and the old mans hate towards the horses.

  29. i think he cared about the horses because he felt bad for them and wanted to help them he felt bad because the owner did not care for them adn they did not have much to eat.

  30. I think the reason why the Son was so interested in ponies, because he was rasied in a angus farm. They probably never had ponies before, since his Father despices ponies. When he named one pony, Cinnamon. Why would you name a animal you don't like? He cares for them, on page 129 he put has hands on the ponies.

    ReplyDelete
  31. I think that the reason why the son was so intrested in the poines beause he was not use to them. He had been grown up around angus for his whole life. He also named one of the ponies and to me That tells me that you care about it.

  32. I think the boy feels a interesting eager to learn more about the horses. Page 120. The off-loaded horses began to play together, nipping at one another with their long yellow teeth, dashing around the periphery of the field, finding the limits of the place.

  33. Page 120 Rug peered near-slightly through the woven wire fence that marked the border between his field and the miniature horses and his face was impressive.
