"Mercy" Discussion Question: Rachel W.

Does his father take pride in the farm, or is he secretly ashamed?

  1. I think he takes pride in the farm because he is one of the last angus farmers but he is also jelouse that exotic animals are now used more often. Like he says, Pigs to the east, with a big poultry operation beyond that, and sheep to the north (with llamas to protect them from packs of feral dogs), and even rumors of a man up in Pocahontes County who wanted to start an ostrich ranch, because ostrich meat was said to be low in fat and chlesterol, and ostrich plumes made wonderful feather dusters that never wore out."

  2. He is one of the last beef farmers in the area. So he has to take pride because he held on to his land all of this time. "The bottom fell out of beef prices." All the other farms around him were turning into weird farms with exotic animals. The father said that, "even rumors of a man up in Pocahontas County who wanted to start an ostrich ranch..." He actually has a good farm that produces something other farmer wish that they could have. "The place to the west wasn't even a farm anymore."
