"Mercy" Discussion Question: Mikaela M. and Erin R.

Why did the author choose this title?
Why is the story titled “Mercy”? Does it have to do with Cinnamon not being shot, or the relationship between the father and son, or even how the narrator feels about the horses?

  1. I think it's because he takes mercy on the ponies.

  2. Yeah I think so to I think the dad knew the fence was going to come down but he didnt shoot them because he saw that the boy likes them and that day when he saw the boy feeding the hores he kinda liked that so thats what I kinda think.

  4. I think it was called mercy, because the dad wasn't going to let the ponies go. He was going to kill them. He realized when he saw the knid of animal that the horses were that he couldn't kill that. I think it was about the mercy shown on the horses.

  6. I think mercy is shown in each of the areas but mostly to the horses. The father showed mercy to the horses AND to the son by not choosing to kill the horses.
"First one that comes on my property, I kill."
"I waited for him to kill her."

  7. I think the boys dad feels mercy for the horses because at the end the horse pulled him down and he didnt shoot him. pg.131. I also think that the boy feels mercy for the horses because every day he goes out and fixes the fence. pg.123

  8. I think that the author chose this title because the father didn't shoot any of the horses.
On page 131 the father didn't shoot he just laughed and showed the horses Mercy.
On page 130 when the fense snapped the horses didn't touch the son.

  9. Throughout most of the story the father acts as if he dislikes the miniature horses. "First one that comes on my property, I kill."(page 125) he also refer to them as 'useless".(page 120) He does show the miniature horses mercy at the end of the story by not killing them, instead laughing.

  10. I think that the story was called "Mercy" because the dad shows mercy to the horses. P 131 for both. "In his hand he held a hunting rifle, his Remington .30-06." this makes us believe he will kill the horses. "The hood of his coat fell away from his face, and I saw that my old man was laughing." this shows mercy because he is not killing the horses thus giving them a second chance which is the definition of "Mercy."

  11. I think that the story is called "Mercy" because the dad gives the horses mercy. We think he is going to kill them because throughout the story he says that they are useless and then he comes out with his gun. When his son discovers that he is laughing, it makes us believe that he is not going to kill the horses.

  12. Have you ever thought that the father was the one being given mercy during an important decision in his life? Maybe it wasn't only the horses being given mercy, perhaps the father is being relieved of some of his stress with trying to be so controlling. He decides to just let loose and live a little.

  13. Hmm... I've been thinking a lot about this question. I'm not sure the horses are shown mercy truly. What happens to them next? They have a horrible life. To play devil's advocate, how does the phrase "putting them out of their misery" come into play? I think the father showed the boy mercy by not killing the horses in front of him, but I'm not sure the horses are shown mercy in the end.

  14. because the author wate fr the boy to show mercy to the horses because they were not being treated right and te boy wanted them to be treated right so he showed mercy tothe horses and thats why its called mercy thats what i think
