We are having a busy day in class: labeling dividers, personalizing composition books, reviewing technology expectations, and starting our class read-aloud: Jerry Spinelli's Stargirl.
By Friday, you need to have created a Google account if you don't already have one, and also log into Blogger so you can comment on this post. This will let me know that you've created your Google account and you are ready to go. Unfortunately, our school computers are allowing students to USE Google accounts, but not set them up. This means that students will need to create accounts at home. If you do not have Internet access at home, and you are reading this at school, please speak to me. I can set up your Google account at home with information you prefer, and then you'll be able to use it while at school without a problem.
To complete this assignment, you need to do the following things:
1) Email me your Google ID and email address it's connected to at griffinb@cedar-falls.k12.ia.us.
2) Comment on the discussion question below by FRIDAY at 3 p.m.
3) Visit back and re-comment if someone adds something interesting to the discussion.
Please comment on one of these questions:
In the section we've read so far, how does Mica High seem like Peet Jr. High, and how does it seem different?
How would you react if someone like Stargirl showed up at Peet?
How do we answear that question if we havn't read the book at all.

ReplyDeleteI would be kind of weirded out because at first she was really different and dressed kinda weird

ReplyDeleteum how do i answer that
ReplyDeleteI think that the kids here at Peet would probably shut her out of their cliques, and make her an outcast before they had any chance to get to know her, because of how she may speak, how she dresses, how she looks, and where she may be from. I think that's harsh because she was nice enough to sing happy b-day to that kid. I would try to get to know her at least.
ReplyDeleteLuke, she read it aloud to us! XD
ReplyDeleteWhat's up with my name? By the way did she read it aloud to us? 2nd hour?
ReplyDeletecan't wait for the book!
ReplyDeleteI would say that I would think she was kind of weird at first because she dressed really differently and acted a lot differently. I also would be kind of creeped out, especially since she randomly sang happy birthday to that kid, but I would think that it was a nice thought. I would also try to get to know her, and see if she's different than she seems.

ReplyDeleteI can't wait to start reading the book!
ReplyDeleteI would problably admire Stargirl because she's really confident and she just does what she wants and really does not care what people say about her. That's a really important quality to have so I would not really be creeped out or anything because she's just doing her thing! I would problably just go up ther her and say " Hi, your weird, but I like that; so cool"!
ReplyDeleteTo Luke and others in 2nd and 3rd hour:
ReplyDeleteWe didn't read the book yet! This is the one we'll start tomorrow. Morning classes need to post a blog comment by TUESDAY AT 3 PM. Don't worry! See you tomorrow, everyone.
hiya...umm i don't think Mica High is anything like Peet...they're kinda judgemental and have the same thought while at peet everyone is kinda different ^_^
ReplyDeletehi everyone! and to answer the question...........I wouldnt really care, I probably wouldnt notice...
ReplyDeletePS. My username is awesome!
I would want to talk to her and if people are saying she is a model I would go talk to her.
ReplyDeleteI would go talk to her and get to know her before being all judgemental and stuff. :)
ReplyDeleteI wouldn't really know what to say because she is different. So it would be hard to go up to here an say hi how are you doin.
ReplyDeleteNot to be judgemental or anything but it just wouldn't be the easiest to do but sonner or later I probably would have the guts to say hi.
ReplyDeleteI would think she is different than all of us but i would still be nice to her
ReplyDeleteThey way I would react by, I would like to know who she is and what are her hobbies and things. I would want something new to happen at school. It would be kind of weird but I would like it instead of the same things happening at school. I would want to be her friends and get to know her. I would say that she is a great singer and that she has great talents. I would definatly want to found out things about her.
ReplyDeleteWell yeah, actually I would be curious about her too, not as much weirded out, but I'd like the difference in the sameness of school too.
ReplyDeleteI really don not know how I would react because it has never happened and I usually react on impulse and since I can't tell the future I can't tell about my future impulses--as well as I know myself =D
ReplyDeleteI think that the people at skool whould kindof make fun of her in a way.. like they whould talk about her all the time.. or like they whould probly thinks she weired.. :P
ReplyDeleteI'm really liking the book so far!!! I really hope the whole school doesn't turn against Stargirl! I'm really excited to hear more!!! :D
ReplyDeleteI would run and go to a new school before she does something to me
ReplyDeleteI would run and go to a new school before she does something to me
ReplyDeleteI would run and go to a new school before she does something to me???
ReplyDeleteok if i have to comment on this book i would say.. that girl stargirl is a total freak.. If she came to peet junior high.. she would be some kind of joke. what i mean by that is she would make every laugh. It would be weird if she came. However, i would like if we have something new in thes school like stargirl. But, if a girl like stargirl came i woukd try to avoid her!!111111
ReplyDeleteSeriously, running to a new school? I know I said I thought she would be weird, but that's a little harsh...
ReplyDeleteIf a person similiar to Stargirl came to Peet Jr. High, I-naturally- would find myself in an odd position. As she seems the type of person to greet rather than MEET, you might end up feeling extremely akward. As for her clothing style, I do believe she would be teased enourmusly, however, for some her outfits would be quite interesting. There could be a valid reason for her "unique" (or "strange") behavior. She could be forign, or perhaps had been depressed previosly, and in compensation, overcorrected in her attempt to remold her personality. Her manner of behaviors would take quite a bit of getting used to, but once you became introduced, you might find her to be a pleasant soul.
ReplyDeleteI would prolly go up to her and say "what up" and be cool and stuff. Unless she started playing her little guitar thing. I'd be weirded out. :-)
ReplyDeleteI would be shcoked
ReplyDeletei would think shes was kinda werid at first becasue she was randomly singing to people happy birthday.. also id think she was pretty confident and doesn't care what people think of her. So i would be a little freaked but then i would just go on with my life:)
ReplyDeleteStargirl is brave and bold, that's for sure. Even I wouldn't have the guts to bring a ukelele of all things and sing random songs. But i think if you get to know her, she isn't that bad.
ReplyDeleteMy reaction would be, "Woah, she's kind of strange," but I would like to get to know her and see what's she's actually about. First impressions can say a lot, but they can stop people from knowing who that person is beyond that first impression. That's why I'd get to know her a little.
ReplyDeleteI think I would be a little bit shocked, but she also seems pretty awesome. I mean, sure, she is quite strange, but who else would get up and play the ukelele? I think it would take a lot of guts to become her friend though, because one might get ridiculed for being a friend to her. I think she is pretty cool.
ReplyDeleteI think that she wouldn't have very many friends and i kinda think shes a weird
ReplyDeletei would probably laugh and i wouldnt really believe that that was really the way she was.
ReplyDeleteI would probally think she was weird and would think it was funny.
ReplyDeleteI agree wiht kaz, people at peet have a lot of different styles (altho maybe not as weird) and thoughts and for sure on the school spirit thing go peet! haha so yea
ReplyDeleteI would laugh at first but then try to be a little nicer and listen to what other people have to say.
ReplyDeleteI think it would be cool if Stargirl came to our school. I really dont think our whole school would be quiet around her or all freaked out. I think she would make a few friends here too. :)
ReplyDeleteGreat comments, everyone!
ReplyDeleteI am not sure what I would think.
ReplyDeleteif someone loike stargirl showed up at peet my reaction to her would be that she is kinda wierd and i might teast her a lil.i would also try to find out more about her. she could be a kinda normale person. you never know how someone is just by the mway they dress and how they act at school. for example some people act like they are bad and they are really goody goodies and others act like they are good but really they are different.
ReplyDeletei also think that she would make some friends. there are some people that are wierd at peet already. and i also dont think people would be all quite around her if she start to sing in front of the lunch room. i am more than postive she would makje friends but i am also more than postive that people would make fun or her too.
ReplyDeleteI think it would be wierd if someone like that showed up at peet. And it would be kinda cool at the same time because i dont think any one at peet would have the guts to get up and do things like she does.
ReplyDeleteI think that the way I would react if someone like Stargirl came to Peet would be something like just kind of ignoring her, unless I got to know her and maybe like her. The lunchtime serenade might be fun, until it got annoying.
ReplyDeleteum i would probaly think she was a little different. but i wouldnt hate her or anything!
ReplyDeletei think i would be realy freaked out
ReplyDeleteTheir school seems pretty similar to Peet, but our people at Peet would probably spread a lot of rumors about her since she's different, but I would at least try to get to know her. I would just be surprised if I met her; seeing how brave and original she was.
ReplyDeletei think it would be kinda wierd but not one person at peet would have the guts to do anything like that things she did
ReplyDeleteI would probally think she was weird and would think it was funny.
ReplyDeleteI think she would be cool. It would be strange at first but she seems like she would be a nice person.
ReplyDeleteI think it is a truely magical book tht everyone should give a good lookin at. stargirl is prolly a really nice and true friend. Stargirl want to be her own individual. lol CK23 says stargirl i will be your friend.
ReplyDeleteIt would be cool because it would be entertaining.
ReplyDeleteI think stargirl is really mysterious and I think that she will become really popular.
ReplyDeleteI tink that this book is very weird and so far bad. She seems like a creepy girl that I would not want as my friend.
ReplyDeleteI would probally think she was weird and would think it was funny.
ReplyDeletestargirl is the coolest person ever!:D she is weird but it would be funny to wacth her..
ReplyDeletei love stargirl!!!
ReplyDeletei would think it is funny until she does something to me
ReplyDeleteif someone like star girl showed up at school i think that people would have talked to her already and either she would have changed or she would have had no friends and would have gotten picked on even though if she was a real kid attending the school then everyone should be able to dress, talk, and do what ever they want/ wear whatever they want as long as it follows school rules.
ReplyDeleteI would think she is one of the "out" people who are really bold and different. I would be a little creeped out by her but be amazed by her self esteem to be able to get up in front of everyone and start playing
ReplyDeleteI think that she was abused or something as a child... at least she didn't have very good social skills, and probably had never been in the public.
ReplyDeleteShe could also have been from some rich people place because her outfits are so unique and she could have had a private tutor for singing, or maybe she came from a do-it-yourself house-hold and got her dresses by making them out of scraps of cloth. If that is the case, she might have hand-made the tie, after seeing what it looked like earlier, because she might be the person who is watching everyone in the beginning where it says,"We were all being watched."
ReplyDeleteWhen I say that she hand-made the tie, I mean the second tie that the narrator got after his mom posted in the paper that he collected porcupine ties.
ReplyDeleteIt would also be cool if someone else just as strange as her in his/her own way and different things at the same level of weirdness, like Moonboy or Sunchild or something...I also think that it would be cool if she suddenly turns normal and totally looks and acts different than she used to and would look like everyone else with style and sort of faded into the crowd and then everyone would all of a sudden realize how much they liked her or something, then all of a sudden came back to her old self and everyone started appreciating her and liking her and then supported her.
ReplyDeletePips, lots of interesting observations! Thanks for sharing. I am interested in the different ways you all are viewing Stargirl. I especially think it's interesting that some comments seem afraid of Stargirl... I wonder what makes her difference so scary. Do you think it makes you nervous that you would get called out and embarrassed?
ReplyDeleteShe is a little crazy I think.
ReplyDeleteIf a person like stargirl came to our school I think it would be weird. I would try to stay away from her and I would like to see how the teachers react.
ReplyDeleteif a girl like stargirl came to my school, id probably just not talk to her, unless she talked to me first
ReplyDeleteshe is a psycho and if she came to peet it would be bad
ReplyDeletei think it's alot differentt; there are alot of changes from here to there. But it seems kind of cool. (:
ReplyDeleteI think the kids at Peet are a little more individual but in some way still try to fit in with some group of people. If a girl like stargirl came to our school i would probably be nice to her but mostly just stay out of her way.
ReplyDeleteI would be scared if she came to my school.
ReplyDeleteim confizled what do we do
ReplyDeleteIt would be weird if she came to our school because she is different. and she plays her ukalele thingy and that would be awkward. (:
ReplyDeletei think that star girl is a weird book and that she needs to go in the hot seat
ReplyDeleteI would be freaked out by her. If she talked to me I might try to get to know her but if she talks about rats and ukeleles or however you spell it, I would run.
ReplyDeleteI think it would be weird just because she is different. it would be awkward
ReplyDeleteits an odd story.
ReplyDeleteit is a weird story. stargirl is kinds weird like how she dresses and how she sings and plays that ukalele. but i think that it is a intersting book and it will get better as we read more.
ReplyDeleteIf you hit F1 you will explode
ReplyDeleteWell, she seems weird but it is starting to look like an interesting book. I just wish w could read more of it the the class periods. I am looking forward to hearing more. ( I think)
ReplyDeleteStargirl is a really good book . i like how different she is from the other people. i like how descriptive the book is, it helps a lot with picturing in your head what happens.
ReplyDeleteI think Stargirl is a great story! It is interesting, and keeps you on your toes!!!
ReplyDeleteshe is weird
ReplyDeleteshes strange
ReplyDelete? confused on what to say
ReplyDeleteI think Star Girl is a crazy hill billy gone wild or she is the best faker I've ever seen.
ReplyDeleteIf someone like star girl showed up at peet it would be wierd i would probably ask here what is she doing or why do she act like that!!!!!!!!!!
ReplyDeleteThe one and on ~Markisha~
I think that it is similar because people (especially kids) do follow the crowd and what other people are doing. There is usually always someone who will be there own person though and may get teased or bullied because they are different.
ReplyDeleteMeh. I've read much better. Try the Demonata series by Daren Shan. Or Cirque Du Freak by Daren Shan. Or possibly Warriors by Erin Hunter. All three are amazing series that everyone SHOULD enjoy, but not all. *looks suspiciously at people*
ReplyDeleteWow people, does somebody have to have something wrong with them to act a little different? It's kinda harsh, some of these comments.
ReplyDeleteI agree, Mal. It's kind of interesting how conditioned we are to fit in. When someone isn't interested in fitting in (or that's not their main priority), there must be something wrong...
ReplyDeletewhere is my Post!!!!!!!!!!!!
